Navigation in a Nutshell

This is my most popular course. It attracts those who want to gain more confidence in the countryside and realise that this can be best accomplished by mastering the basics of map and compass skills.
We start the day in a cafe over a cup of coffee identifying, amongst other features, public rights of way, woodland, and open land on a 1:25000 Ordnance Survey map. We learn how to use the compass to set the map to face north and measure distance…. then off we go.
During our walk, normally 8-10km, we’ll learn how to:
- Follow linear features like fences, woodland edges and public rights of way
- Make sure we are always going in the right direction
- Estimate distance using sight, pacing and timing
- Recognise the contour features which represent slopes, hills, ridges and valleys
- Learn tricks to work out where we are if we’re not sure
and a lot more! There’s no pressure to get things right, and I always try to create a relaxed atmosphere.
