The Challenger

This is a fast moving course in terms of the skills learnt and I normally teach it 1-to-1. It is most suited to fast learners who have plenty of walking experience but want to take their walks to another level.
We’ll start over a cup of coffee having a look at how a 1:25000 Ordnance survey map works, then head off into the countryside. During the day we will, amongst other things, learn how to:
- Use the compass to set the map to face north
- Estimate distance using pacing, timing and sight
- Check our route using collecting and catching features
- Use the compass to walk on a bearing across open land and set preemptive bearings
- Recognise the contour lines representing hills, slopes, cols, ridges and valleys
- Use a contour only map to navigate
There’s no pressure to get things right, and I always try to create a relaxed atmosphere. I will supply all the maps and a Silva Expedition compass for the duration of the course.
